WELL-ESTABLISHED
First planted in 1996, Walnut Block vineyard lies in the world renowned Wairau Valley in Marlborough.
Alluvial soils, deposited over thousands of years from an ancient river bed that flowed between the mountainous borders of this valley, added to the high sunshine hours and temperate New Zealand climate, have created Marlborough’s unique growing conditions.
WALNUT BLOCK VINEYARD – GOING ORGANIC
Walnut Block is going organic, and as of 2010, the vineyard is fully run on organic principles and practices. While the Walnut Block Range and Collectables Series 2011 vintage will be organic, the strict guidelines of the certification process means that full organic certification for the vineyard will not occur until 2013.
EXPERIENCED ORGANIC VITICULTURIST
Since 2006, Nigel Sowman, Walnut Blocks viticulturist has studied and practiced organics and has become a recognised authority on organic viticulture. Nigel is often asked to share his views to peers in the industry and speak at Wine Growers’ conferences on organics in the vineyard. Nigel is managing Walnut Block’s organic conversion, and is proud of the exceptional quality of fruit being produced using only organic practices.
WHY BUY ORGANIC WINE?
Organic wine is both environmentally friendly and better for your health, because there are no chemical herbicides or pesticides used in the vineyard. Eco-friendly viticulture produces wine of exceptional quality.
“Organic wine grapes allow the vineyard’s unique characters to be expressed due to less outside influences such as sprays and fertilizers. Depth of flavour and mouthfeel improves as the vines become more self sufficient and naturally balanced which also results in a wider nuance of complexity” - Nigel Sowman
